Pre-calculated emissions: Waste data requirements (Beta)

Use this guide to prepare your data before uploading to ensure accurate processing.

Updated over a week ago

⚠️ Pre-calculated emissions are only available for beta-users for now. We will notify you when this feature becomes available.

This article explains what data you need to provide when uploading pre-calculated emissions for Waste Generation activities.

What activities does Waste Generation cover?

The Waste Generation activity area includes these specific activities:

  • Solid Waste Generation

  • Wastewater Generation

Required data fields

Basic information (required for all activities)

Facility Name

  • Select the facility where emissions should be allocated

  • Choose from your existing facilities in the platform

Activity Name

  • Select the specific waste activity:

    • Solid Waste Generation: For solid waste treatment and disposal

    • Wastewater Generation: For wastewater treatment processes

  • This determines which calculation methods are available

Calculation Method

  • Choose the method that matches how your emissions were calculated

  • For each sub-activity, you can choose from available calculation methods below:

Sub-activity

Available calculation method

Solid Waste Generation

One of:

  • Waste Treatment - Quantity-Based

  • Waste Treatment - Spend-Based

Wastewater Generation

One of:

  • Wastewater Treatment

  • Waste Treatment - Spend-Based

  • Estimated Wastewater Treatment

GHG Calculation Method

  • This field is pre-filled based on your calculation method selection

  • Verify the method shown matches your approach (e.g., Waste-Type-Specific Method, Spend-Based Method)

Start Date and End Date

  • Provide the period your emissions cover

  • End date must be after start date

Input Quantity and Input Unit

  • Enter the activity data quantity (e.g., 2.5, 1,200)

  • Select the appropriate unit:

    • Weight units: kg, t, lb for solid waste quantities

    • Volume units: m³, l, US_gallon for wastewater

    • Currency units: GBP, USD, EUR for spend-based calculations

  • This enables complete analysis capabilities in the platform

Emission Quantity (kgCO₂e)

  • Enter your total calculated emissions in kgCO₂e

  • This is the final emission amount for your waste activity

Scope Category

By default, the scope category will be assigned to 3.05. Waste Generated in Operations.

You can use drop-down menu in the template to change the assignment

Emissions Are Estimated

  • Select "Yes" if your emissions are estimated

  • Select "No" if they're based on measured data or detailed calculations

Optional data fields

Emission Description

  • Add descriptions to help with analysis and reporting

  • Examples: "Cafeteria food waste", "Office paper recycling", "Industrial wastewater"

Record ID

  • Add a unique identifier to link back to your raw data

  • Must be unique across all records if provided

  • Useful for tracking individual waste streams or invoices

Emission Factor ID

  • Internal platform use only

  • Provide if you used emission factors from the Altruistiq catalogue

Supplier Information

  • Supplier Name: Enter the waste management service provider

  • Supplier Country: Required if supplier name is provided

  • Supplier VAT Number: Optional tax identification number

Adding supplier information enables emission reduction tracking through supplier engagement features and helps with supply chain reporting.

Calculation method guidance

Waste Treatment - Quantity-Based

  • Use when you have actual waste quantities for solid waste (weight or volume)

  • Most accurate method for waste emissions

  • Requires waste quantities in kg, tonnes, or volume units

Waste Treatment - Spend-Based

  • Use when you only have waste management costs for solid waste or waste water

  • Less accurate but useful when quantity data isn't available

  • Requires spend amounts in currency units

Wastewater Treatment

  • Use when you have actual waste quantities for wastewater (volume)

  • Based on actual wastewater volumes

Estimated Wastewater Treatment

  • Use for estimated wastewater emissions

  • Based on estimates of water consumed (in volume)
